The muscles of older men and women who have exercised for decades are indistinguishable in many ways from those of healthy 25-year-old’s, according to a new study of a group of active septuagenarians.

These men and women also had much higher aerobic capacities than most people their age, the study showed, making them biologically about 30 years younger than their chronological ages.

Regular exercise is one of the most effective ways to keep your body healthy and functioning at its best, even as you age. Here are a few ways that regular exercise can help keep your body feeling like it’s 30 years younger:

  1. Improves cardiovascular health: Regular exercise improves the health of your heart and lungs, which can help prevent age-related diseases such as heart disease and stroke.
  2. Increases muscle mass: As we age, our muscle mass naturally decreases, which can lead to weakness and a decreased ability to perform everyday tasks. Regular exercise helps to increase muscle mass, which can help keep your body strong and active.
  3. Enhances joint mobility: Regular exercise helps to keep your joints mobile and flexible, which can help prevent age-related conditions such as arthritis.
  4. Boosts bone density: Regular weight-bearing exercise, such as walking, jogging, or weightlifting, can help increase bone density, which can help prevent age-related conditions such as osteoporosis.
  5. Improves mental health: Regular exercise can help reduce stress, anxiety and depression. It also helps to improve your mood, sleep quality and overall cognitive function, which can help keep your mind sharp as you age.
  6. Helps maintain a healthy weight: Regular exercise can help keep your body at a healthy weight, which can help prevent age-related conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure.

To enjoy the benefits of regular exercise, it is recommended to aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity per week. It is also important to include strength-training exercises at least two times a week.

In summary, regular exercise is one of the best ways to keep your body feeling young and healthy, even as you age. By improving cardiovascular health, increasing muscle mass, enhancing joint mobility, boosting bone density, improving mental health and helping maintain a healthy weight, regular exercise can help keep your body functioning at its best for many years to come.
